A Tonsilitis Tutorial

As a doctor's wife I pick up a little health knowledge here and there. Such as when your normally ornery son is lying around like this...

and his face looks like this...

And you take his temperature and it looks like this...

that means he is sick. I know, I know...my knowledge is impressive but please don't put me on a pedestal for my diagnostic abilities.

Now, if, upon further investigation, you discover that he also has a sore throat (and possibly a headache) then you suspect he might have either a bacterial or viral infection in his throat. The next step is to look at the kid's throat with a otoscope (if you live at my house) or a flashlight (if you live at your house). If his throat looks like the picture on the left...that equals antibiotics. If it looks like the one on the right...that equals NO ANTIBIOTICS. Please do not call your doctor and ask for antibiotics if it is clearly viral. He most likely won't give it to you. Or at least he probably shouldn't because it won't do jack squat except cost you money.

Bub's throat looks like this... Notice the pus pockets, the gray furry tongue, the redness, the swollen tonsils and uvula (UVULA...Not to be confused with vulva although if there is any pus pockets or redness and swelling there, you might also need antibiotics. But that is a whole 'nother topic of health education). I might also add to the list of symptoms...not such fresh breath. YUCK.

But I am thankful that his throat doesn't look like this...

And especially not this...(GRO to the double S.) Amen.

And I am also very thankful for this...

And the pharmacist who, God bless her very soul, stayed late at work so that Doc could come pick up the antibiotics for our poor little guy. Now if it will only start to work its magic...

In the mean time, I have to admit that Doc and I secretly don't mind so much when he's a bit under the weather because frankly, that means that we can keep up with him and he's too tired to do things like eat his weight in Fiber Con tablets or make secret recipe Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream when we're not looking.

Poor Bub! I hope he gets to feeling better soon (for his sake) but realizes what bliss it is to e calm and not eat FiberCon tablets that he shares with his brother (for your sake). Thanks for the tutorial! I knew there was some reason I read your blog, in addition to the laughs, of course.

You are hilarious. That is a very sad and lethargic looking little man. I hope C gets to feeling better soon, K misses him at school.

Oh my that does look painful. Poor thing. My youngest had the viral type not long ago, luckily it only lasted a few days.

Poor little guy! Only a blogger would take time to photograph your poor sick child, and the thermometer AND his throat so you could post it online for all to see! (lol).

Here from Kimber's blog. Nice to meet you. I absolutely LOVE your blog. It is going on my blogroll for sure.

And since I am a nurse, I will have to go check out your hubby's blog to see what he has to say. I doubt any of the docs I work with know what a blog is.
